The Brunswick All-Stars came up with two clutch at-bats in the bottom of the sixth inning to knot the score at three and then got the game winner in the bottom of the 11th when Cassidy Conwell scored on a passed ball to earn a thrilling 4-3 win over Halifax and capture the Virginia Dixie Ponytails X-Play state softball title.
It was an exhilarating victory for Brunswick after Halifax had topped the local team 10-4 in the first game of the championship round last Wednesday night to set up a winner-take-all state title game.
Many of the Brunswick players will be traveling to their second straight World Series after the local team won the Angels state title last year.
This year’s team is headed to Hopkins County, Texas where they will play Lake Placid, Florida on Saturday in a first-round game.
“It’s such a blessing to win back to back years,” said Brunswick Ponytails’ manager Tommy King. “This year’s team really fights to the end. They want it more than any team I have ever coached. It was a total team effort (to win the state title) and we have the best parents, fans and supporters.”
In the first game of the championship round, Brunswick got off to a great start when Emily “Slim” King led off the game with a single and Aubrey Corum followed with a RBI double. A single by Eva Tromm scored Corum and Riley Griffin drove in a run with a RBI single for a 3-1 lead.
Halifax tied the score in the top of the third with a pair of runs and then scored five in the fourth inning and two in the sixth for the 10-4 victory.
