FREEMAN – An early morning house fire claimed the life of two people, Joan Mayo, 79, and Mary E. Moton, 80, Monday, Jan. 27.

Second Assistant Chief C. W. Roberts with the Dolphin Volunteer Fire Department said the call came in around 5:31 a.m. for a structure fire at 3730 Reedy Creek Road. He said Lawrenceville Volunteer Fire Department and Alberta Volunteer Fire Department also responded. Greensville Volunteer Fire Department was also called to assist. Roberts said when the firefighters arrived the house was 3/4 engulfed. Two firefighters were injured trying to assist. One sustained second degree burns and the other fell off a ladder approximately 8 feet from the ground. The cause of the fire has not been determined.
