The fourth-seeded Brunswick High School boys’ basketball team topped fifth-seeded Bruton HS 75-66 on Monday night in a Class 2, Region A quarterfinal contest in Lawrenceville.

The win improved the Bulldogs to 13-11 on the season and advances them to a regional semifinal contest at top-seeded Goochland HS on Wednesday evening. A win in the semifinal would qualify Brunswick for the state tournament.

Brunswick jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead at the 5:32 mark of the first quarter on a bucket by Diamonte Brodnax.

Bruton responded with an 8-0 run to open up a 2-point lead but Brunswick closed the first stanza on a 14-3 run to take a 20-11 lead after the first eight minutes.

Jaquan Miller scored seven points for the Bulldogs in the opening quarter while Jadan Firman added six.

Brunswick got five straight from Firman to open up a 27-15 lead at the 6:38 mark of the second quarter.

A tip-in by Tywon Singleton late in the quarter and a trey from Jaheim Hicks gave Brunswick a commanding 44-25 lead at the halftime break.

The Bulldogs opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 51-25 lead on a bucket by Tre’Von Callis at the 5:18 mark.

Bruton heated up from the outside and ended the stanza on a 15-5 run to trim the Brunswick lead to 56-40.

A bucket by Jordan Wesson extended the Brunswick lead to 62-46 at the 5:55 mark of the fourth quarter.

Bruton went on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 11 points but that was as close as they would get until a bucket at the buzzer cut the final margin to 75-66.

Firman led Brunswick with 25 points in the game while Miller added 18.

Ryan Vaughter led Bruton with 14 points while Andrew McCurdy scored 12 and Rae Bartlett added 11.

Lady Bulldogs Fall

The seventh-seeded Brunswick varsity girls’ basketball team saw its season come to an end after falling 57-34 at second-seeded Greensville HS in a Region 2, Group A quarterfinal contest on Monday night.

Nyiesha Pair led the Lady Bulldogs with 16 points while Niaya Henderson added 13.

Lenah Clements led Greensville with 23 points while Sanijah Robinson added 17.

Brunswick finished the season with an 11-12 record.
