Officers elected, volunteers needed, next meeting is July 23

LAWRENCEVILLE – Volunteers are working to establish a Community Center to serve the citizens of Brunswick County and surrounding area. The officers are Mike Dotti – Chairman, Dr. Alfonzo R. “Fonz” Seward – Vice Chairman, Tiffeney Brown – Secretary and Jeannell Jones – Treasurer. A meeting was held on Tuesday, July 2. The next meeting is Tuesday, July 23, at 5 p.m. at the Lawrenceville Town Office, 400 North Main Street.

As background the original plan was to form a YMCA under the umbrella of the Family YMCA of Emporia-Greensville, a 501 © 3 organization, but that did not work out. The goal was to determine if $500,000 could be raised in a capital campaign.

Earlier on the recommendation of the Steering Committee organized to explore the possibility of bringing a greater YMCA presence to the Brunswick area, the Brunswick County Industrial Development Authority Board of Directors allocated $10,000 for a comprehensive study to be performed by Gary H. Willette and Associates, LLC.

According to the study the total amount of gifts identified was $32,500 or 6.5 percent of the goal of $500K.

At the July 2 meeting Dotti said those who support forming a Community Center have talked to Bryant Stith with S.C.O.R.E. about the project. The Brunswick-Mayfield Recreation Center pledged its support as well but did not donate any funds to the project.

The committee is researching the 501 © 3 tax deductible status.
