87 counts result in $500,000+ restitution
LAWRENCEVILLE – Gwen Clary Painter, 58, pleaded guilty to 87 counts of embezzlement on Jan. 9, 2020.
Lezlie Green, the Commonwealth’s Attorney, said an indictment dated December 2018 included 59 counts and an indictment dated February 2019 included 28 counts for a total of 87 counts. The time frame was Dec. 27, 2011 to Oct. 16, 2018. Painter worked as a bookkeeper for Creedle, Jones & Alga when the embezzlement occurred.
Judge Carson Saunders accepted the guilty plea and allowed Painter to remain on a $100,000 secured bond. A pre-sentence report was ordered for April 23 to be heard at 2 p.m. in Brunswick Circuit Court. Restitution totals $535,060.95. Judge Saunders ordered Painter to have no contact with the victims directly or through social media.
Green said the three victims are C. K. Greene, the owner of Virginia Custom Thinning and Virginia Trees; Greg Jones, owner of Jones Timber Team; and Raymond Andrews, owner of RJA Fire Extinguisher Sales and Service,
