Alice Allen Moore died February 7, 2015, in Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg. She was born Feb. 11, 1926 in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. She was employed at Emporia Manufacturing Company which later became Miller Homes in Emporia for many years. She was a lifetime member of Calvary Baptist Church all her life where she taught children’s Sunday school for 40 years and was active in GAs, WMU and Senior Circle.

The Reverend Doctor M. Ott Davis of Chester, Virginia died on January 28, 2015. Dr. Davis was the son of James McClellan Davis and Bettie Matthews Davis and was born in Brunswick County, on January 3,1936. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty Thomas Davis of Chester; his three children, Susan Davis Payne of Bon Air, Karren Davis Streagle and her husband, Tim of McCammon, Idaho and Richard J. Davis and his wife, Rebecca of Spotsylvania and four grandchildren, Andrew,James Davis, Matthew Ray Davis, Mattison Davis Payne and Lauren Alyse Streagle. One of six children, Dr Davis was predeceased by Richard Davis and Jane Paige. His surviving siblings include, Ann Bowen, Emily Stead and Howard Davis and his wife, Jeanne. As well, he is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

She was a LPN and operating room tech for 60 years and a woman of Methodist faith. She is preceded in death by her sister, Jane Smith; a brother, Burnell Riegel; and two grandsons, Adam Forrest and Bradley Summersill. She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Cowdery and husband Dean and Nancy Reddington and husband Steve of Deltona, Fla.; her sister, Kathleen Grizzard of Drewryville; her brother, Franklin Riegel and wife Jane of Edgerton; a sister-in-law, Edna Whitby of Lawrenceville,; nine grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Ronnie Dean Lewis, age 56, of Alberta passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2014 at Community Memorial HealthCenter. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Ashton and Geraldine Pearson Lewis. He is survived by his son, William Thomas Lewis, of Lawrenceville, his brother, William Dale Lewis, of Alberta, and two sisters, Kimberly Lewis Wagstaff, of South Hill, and Melanie Lewis Seamster, of Raleigh, N.C. “Dean” loved many outdoor activities including hunting and fishing. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Now taking applications for the smartest person alive. The spot just opened up. Wentworth Bagley "W.B." Crane, Jr. (95) of Dolphin passed away on Dec. 4, 2014 at home in the company of family. The oldest son of Wentworth Bagley Crane and Pattie Jane Pittard, he was born into a farming family in Edgerton on June 30, 1919. His father and grandfather taught him carpentry, electrical work, and plumbing. He learned self-discipline from an early age and he strived for excellence in everything. At Lawrenceville High School, he was a honor student and star athlete, lettering in football and baseball. He was awarded a college academic scholarship from the Brunswick County School System and earned a spot on the Virginia Tech football team, though he was unable to attend.

Paula Thomas Brandt, age 47 of Gasburg, formerly of Sanford, N.C., died Thursday, Sept. 4, 2014 at Duke Raleigh Hospital. She was born in Lee County, daughter of Carolyn Mason Thomas and the late Larry Thomas. She was preceded in death by her father and grandparents Irene Thomas and Henry and Annie Mason. A memorial service was conducted Saturday at Pleasant Hill Christian Church, Gasburg, with Rev. Greg Hand officiating. Graveside funeral services were conducted on Sunday at the Baptist Chapel Church Cemetery with Rev. Greg Hand and Rev. John Hackney officiating. Surviving are her mother Carolyn Mason Thomas of Sanford; husband Scott Brandt of the home: sister Sylvia Mason Johnson and husband Donald of Lillington, N.C.; brother Randy Thomas of Sanford and two nieces. Nelda Spence Evans, 85, of Lawrenceville, passed away at VCU Medical Center on Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014 after a brief illness. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and co-worker. She worked for Peebles Department Store for 50 years starting out as a salesperson and retiring as Manager of Store 1. She was preceded in death by her son, David R. Evans; her father and mother, Willie Fed and Gracie Spence; and her brothers, Page and Wilbur Spence. She is survived by her grandson, Jason Evans and wife Brenda; great grandchildren, Makayla and David Evans; daughter-in-law Rebecca Evans; sisters, Nan Ellen Finch and Susie Marston (Jerry); brother, Darrel Spence (Frances); sister-in-law, Geraldine Spence; and special cousin, Barbara Batte. Jennifer Michelle Pollard of Suffolk, born April 19, 2008 went to live with Jesus on Monday, July 14. Our beautiful, “Angel Girl” daughter served her God in many ways, especially as His instrument to draw many together in prayer as she was suddenly thrust in the short fight for her life by a very rare disease. She loved hopping, playing with balls, singing, chasing bubbles and balloons and swinging. She also loved being read to. Jennifer is survived by her parents, J. Michael and Carolyn Jackson Pollard; and her twin sister, Julia Caroline Pollard of Suffolk. Jennifer is also survived by her granny, Betty Jackson of Lawrenceville, her PaPa, Johnie Pollard and Grandma Shirley Pollard of Morehead City, N.C. She is survived by her uncles and aunts, Bruce and Penny Jackson of Williamsburg, Greg and Cindy Jackson of Courtland, Faye and James Cree of Prescott, Arizona and cousins, Emily Jackson and Bruce Jackson II of Williamsburg, Dana, Jason, Jada and Duncan Brittle of Courtland; Molly Jackson of Charlotte, N.C., Kimberley Cree and Kaitlyn Cosentino of Prescott, Arizona and James Cree IV of Denver Colorado. She is also survived by her very loving church family and very special friends. Jennifer was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, B. Waylon Jackson; her paternal grandmother, Deles”Dell” Pollard and beloved Jack Dog. Special thanks go to the many new friends she made while being so sweetly and lovingly cared for at the Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters, Norfolk, the Hospitalist Team, the Hematology/Oncology Team, the PICU Team, The Child Life Team, the Chaplain Team and so many others. The celebration of Jennifer’s life was held July 18 at High Street United Methodist Church, Courtland with Rev. John Ashley officiating. Wright Funeral Home, Franklin was in charge of arrangements.

Earnest “Roy” Chambliss, age 102, of Triplet, passed away on July 20, 2014. Roy was preceded in death by his beloved wife and best friend of 73 years, Nina Chambliss. Roy was a leader of a large family in which he instilled true Christian values, morals, and unconditional love.

Phillip Coleman was born on March 7, 1941 to the late Robert and Perry Bell Owens Coleman of Lawrenceville. Our beloved Phillip Coleman departed this life on June 24, 2014. Phillip was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Perry Bell Owens Coleman, one son, Darrick Coleman, one daughter, Marea Coleman, two sisters, Effie Mae Green and Georgia Weddington, and one brother, Herburt Coleman.

MSgt Teddy G. Coleman (retired), entered into eternal rest on Sunday, June 22, 2014 at the Veteran’s Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Ted was born on July 18, 1935 to John Callie and Sarah Hill Coleman in Alberta. Ted joined the Mercy Seat RZUA Church in Warfield at an early age. He re-established his membership after his military service and remained a member until his death on June 22, 2014.

James Hugh “Mac” McAden, III, age 64, of Brodnax, passed away June 23, 2014. Mac was the President of the Brunswick County Farm Bureau and the Co-Owner of McAden Dairy Farms/Trucking. He is preceded in death by his father, J.H. McAden, Jr. He is survived by his mother, Peggy P. McAden; two sons, J. H. McAden, IV and wife Shannon and Ashley McAden; his significant other, Brenda Tucker; three step children, Kay Wright, Anne Phillips, and John Tucker; seven grandchildren, Kasie, James, Hunter, Howard, Katie, Ashton, and Brayden; his brother, Chris McAden and wife Jean; his sister, Deborah M. Tuck and husband Herbert; nieces and nephews; and great nieces and nephews.

Oliver M. Harrison was born November 10, 1948 in Dolphin to James B. Harrison, Sr. and Elnora Macklin Harrison. He departed this life on Sunday, June 8, 2014. He was a member of Wilson Chapel Baptist Church. Oliver graduated from James Solomon Russell High School in 1967. He attended Elizabeth City State University, Saint Paul’s College, and the D.C. Teacher’s College. He was employed by and retired from the United States Internal Revenue Service as the first black International IRS agent.

Mary Lee Graves Drummond, the daughter of the late Herman and Ora Graves was born on Dec. 5, 1931 in Brunswick County. Mary was the fourth child out of 10 children born to that union. Mary quietly slipped away to eternal rest on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Henrico Doctors Hospital in Richmond.

Barbara Ann Coleman Mays

Barbara Ann Coleman Mays was born on Nov. 1, 1952, to the late John Callie and Hattie Cook Coleman in Alberta. After a long, courageous battle with injuries sustained in a car accident that occurred on May 28, 2010, she peacefully entered into eternal rest on Thursday, May 22, 2014. She was in the presence of her loving family when God decided it was time for heavenly peace. Her siblings, Charles, Mary Olga, Etta, Nancy, and John Cleveland all preceded her in death.
