Scarlet J. Rawls was born on Aug. 9, 1940 to the late Alphonso Jones and Annie Lewis Jones. She was gifted with a stepmom, Erma Jones. Scarlet entered into eternal rest on Sunday, July 7, 2019 at St. Mary’s Hospital, Richmond, Virginia. She was a graduate of James Solomon Russell High School in Lawrenceville, Virginia and continued her education at Essex Community College, East Orange, N.J. as a Registered Nurse. She later retired from Greystone State Hospital in 1992. Scarlet was baptized at Mount Zion Church in Dundas, Virginia. She later joined Fellowship Mission Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey. At the time of her death, she was a member of Poplar Lawn Baptist Church in Blackstone, Virginia where she served in many capacities:

Missionary Board, Hospitality Ministry, Deaconess Board, Treasurer of the Missionary Ministry, and dedicated member of the Sunday School. She was joined in holy matrimony to Eddie Rawls on Oct. 24, l981. She became the stepmother of Eddie Rawls, Hillside, N.J.; Lori RawlsCrosby, Southington, Conn.; and Linda Fenney-Rawls, West Orange, N.J. Scarlet loved cooking and entertaining her family. She received joy from her baking. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Alphonso Jones, Jr., Alfred Jones, Calvin Jones, and Jerry Jones. She leaves to mourn a special, dedicated, caring, and loving friend, James Williams; four sisters, Marie Stith, Newport News, Virginia; Maudie Staton (Hilliard), Hillside, N.J.; Carolyn Blackman, Dover, N.J.; and Darlene Drummond (James), Capital Heights, Md. Her sister, Bernice Burton, Newark, NJ, preceded her in death. She is also survived by two brothers, Bernard Jones, Alberta, Virginia, and Larry Jones of Baltimore, Md. She treasured time spent with family and will be sorely missed by her nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.

Funeral arrangements will be held Sunday, July 14, 2019 from Poplar Lawn Baptist Church in Blackstone, Virginia at 1 p.m. with interment in Poplar Lawn Cemetery. Brown’s Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.
