To the Editor:

Hard to believe the holiday season is quickly approaching. The stores are lining their shelves with holiday decorations, the toy departments are being stocked and children are already making their lists.

Many Brunswick County families will not be able to fill their children’s wishes this Christmas. They are struggling to know how to pay their electric bill, keep their children clothed and/or to cover the rent. Over 31% of our County’s children live in poverty. Many of our elderly must choose whether to have their lights, their medicine or food for dinner.

During this season of sharing - please remember your neighbor who might be struggling. The only funds the Brunswick County Department of Social Services has available to help families in crisis are through donations from churches, civic organizations and private citizens. These funds are used to help families with electric bills, housing costs, medication and other emergencies.

The Brunswick County Department of Social Services is again sponsoring the Holiday Sharing Program to assist eligible families and the elderly. If you would like to sponsor a child for Christmas, a family, or senior: please contact the agency at (434-) 848-2142. We accept financial donations; just designate it for the Christmas Fund. Or you can bring a new toy/s or book/s to the agency for distribution.

The women of the Lawrenceville Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary will be placing red totes throughout the County in stores, banks, and businesses where you can place toys to be shared with “our” children. The Auxiliary will be helping us make sure our children have a bright Christmas!

If you would like more information on how you can make a difference for a child or senior citizen this holiday season, please call the Brunswick County Department of Social Services at (434) 848-2142. You can mail your financial donations to: Brunswick County Department of Social Services, 201 Sharp Street, Lawrenceville, Virginia 23868.

We are counting on the citizens of Brunswick County to help. Thank you.
