To the Editor:

Thank you for your support for the Lawrenceville University Flag Project. Donated flags will be raised in Peebles Park on Main Street at 6 p.m. on the first Monday and third Monday of the month. To date we have received commitments for more flags than dates established this year. The purpose of the project was to draw attention to the universities citizens from Brunswick County have attended. We have many students from our area that continue their education beyond high school and that fact is often overlooked. Longwood reported 113 alumni from Brunswick County and 131 alumni enrolled but left for some reason. East Carolina reported 3 alumni from Lawrenceville and 13 alumni from Brunswick County. A copy of the zip codes served in Brunswick County was sent to alumni offices. Norfolk State indicated they would contact Brunswick County alumni to attend the flag raising event on September 4, 2018.

Peebles Park is a reflection park donated to the Town by the Peebles family. I like to think of it as one of the many hidden gems in Lawrenceville. One person visiting the park said it would be a great place to paint in the morning. Wouldn’t it be nice to have several canvas painters in the park painting at the same time? Readers of this letter, what are your ideas for Lawrenceville? Small events often lead to larger events.

This is a first attempt project that I hope will be continued next year during daylight savings time. One proposed change is raise the flags in Peebles Park and, after the two weeks, fly the flag on the Town of Lawrenceville flag pole an additional two weeks. The size of the flag is 3’ X 5’. Information is available in the Town of Lawrenceville Office about the project. Flags remain property of the donor unless they want to give it to the Town.

Commitments for Virginia Tech and Hampden-Sydney have been made but flags have not been received.
