To the Editor:

“Let’s Move, Jump, & Play: It’s Our County Fun Day!”, an inaugural event, will be held on Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Brunswick-Mayfield Recreation Center hosted by the Brunswick Health Ambassadors. This is a great opportunity for community residents of all ages to enjoy planned activities including a free lunch. Regular monthly meetings and formed committees continue to plan and organize this large event. Numerous vendors from various organizations and groups will be on site. Physical activities such as basketball games for different age groups, swimming, seated exercise, Zumba and other games are planned along with bingo, arts & crafts, container gardening for seniors, cooking demonstrations, yoga, corn hole, and much more. This is a rain or shine event.

BHA will also promote their walking challenge. Citizens are encouraged to sign up at the event and track their daily walking totals to help Brunswick County reach its goal of collectively walking 1 million miles to improve the health of the County. According to the American Cancer Society & the National Cancer Institute, exercise is associated with a lower risk of 13 specific cancers, including breast and colorectal cancer (ACS, 2016). The Cancer Research and Resource Center & BHA are committed to helping individuals understand the importance of exercise and living a healthy lifestyle. You do not have to be an athlete to consider yourself physically active. By simply walking 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week, you will meet the recommended activity levels suggested by the American Cancer Society (150 minutes per week for adults).

In addition to the opportunities to be active, there will also be informational vendors such as the Brunswick County Library, Brunswick County Cancer Association, Lawrenceville Farmers Market, Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, VCU Community Memorial Hospital (with free health screenings), the Improvement Association and much more. The Brunswick High School Resource Officers are participating to show students their “in plain clothes” side by manning a fun dunking tank! This will be a perfect summer day for the whole family.

Please bring your family, friends, and your own chairs, as well as your appetite and join for a day full of fun. The CRRC supports this event and hope you will come out.

The Lawrenceville Cancer Research & Resource Center is funded by VCU Massey Cancer Center and the Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission.
