World Series Bound
What a thrilling night it was last for the Brunswick All-Stars as they topped a good Halifax County squad 4-3 in 11 innings last Wednesday night to capture the Virginia Dixie Softball Ponytails state title and earn a World Series berth for the second straight summer.
The Brunswick girls captured the Angels state title last summer to earn their first World Series berth and now they are headed back.
This year’s team is scheduled to leave today for Hopkins County, Texas where they will play the Florida state champions in a first-round contest on Saturday.
The local girls were mighty impressive at the state tournament in Buckingham.
Despite falling 10-4 to Halifax in the first game of the championship round, Brunswick never got down on themselves in the second game even when they trailed 3-1 late in the game.
Going into the bottom of the sixth, Brunswick needed a big rally and they got that when Aubrey Corum ripped a double to drive in Emily King and Eva Tromm scored Corum with a RBI groundout to tie the score at three and sent the game to extra innings.
King only had two innings she could pitch in the title game but Tromm, Corum and Ruth Anne Torres did a great job to keep the game close and earn the win when Cassidy Conwell scored the game winner in the bottom of the 11th on a passed ball.
