State Bound

The Brunswick High School boys’ basketball team will open play in the Class 2 state tournament on Friday with a contest against Region B champion East Rockingham HS.

Congratulations to the Bulldogs and Coach Charreko Walker who said before the season started that this was the most talented team he has coached and they had hopes of making a deep run in the playoffs.

Brunswick earned the state bid in thrilling fashion by beating archrival Greensville County in overtime in Emporia last Wednesday night in a 2A semifinal contest.

The Bulldogs played a tremendous game against top-seeded John Marshall HS on Friday night in the 2A regional title game and the 97-71 final score was in no way indicative of what a competitive game it was.

Heading into the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs trailed by only four but JM took advantage of several turnovers and then went on a big run late to make the final score more lopsided than the game actually was.

The Bulldogs will have their hands full with East Rockingham who will bring a 24-2 record into the game after topping Stuarts Draft HS 106-95 in the 2B regional title game.

The Eagles will come into the contest against Brunswick on a 14-game winning streak.

Congrats also this week also to Coach Michael Barmoy and the Park View Lady Dragons who advanced to the 3A regional semifinals before coming up short in a 76-45 loss against a good Lakeland HS team on Saturday at The Scope in Norfolk.

The Lady Dragons set a school record for the girls’ basketball program by winning their 20th game in the 53-35 victory over York HS in a regional quarterfinal contest in South Hill last Wednesday night.

The Southside Virginia CC men’s basketball team won its regular season finale with a 92-74 win over Germanna CC on Saturday and will open play in the USA National Post-Grad tournament on Thursday when they face DME Sports Academy (FL) in a first-round contest. A win would earn them a date in the semifinals on Friday against the winner of Combine (NC) and Inspire Academy (FL).
