The Brunswick High School varsity boys’ basketball team earned the No. 2 seed for this week’s Tri-Rivers District tournament after winning their final two games of the regular season last week.
The Bulldogs opened the week with a 61-52 win over Southampton HS and then topped Surry HS 60-47 on Saturday for Senior Night.
The two wins improved Brunswick to 15-7 overall and completed a 13-3 mark in district play.
Brunswick will play host to a district tournament quarterfinal game on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs got off to a good start against Surry, jumping out to a 7-4 lead on a trey and runner in the lane from Jermonta James.
Two buckets by Jadan Firman gave Brunswick an 11-8 lead at the 1:10 mark of the first quarter but Surry’s Khamari Palmer hit a trey in the final minute to cut the Bulldogs lead to 13-11.
Brunswick opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 23-11 lead on a 3-point play by Firman at the 5:02 mark.
Surry answered with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 23-18 on two free-throws by Palmer.
Brunswick got a steal and layup by James for a 26-18 lead at the 1:23 mark and the Bulldogs took a 31-20 lead to the halftime break.
The Bulldogs outscored Surry 14-10 in the third quarter behind five points from Reginald Walker and four from Firman and cruised down the stretch to the victory.
