While the temperatures outside are falling, things are heating up on the gridiron as our local high-school football teams enter the final stretch of the regular season.
Brunswick earned a big 31-14 win over Park View on Friday night to keep their 2A regional playoff hopes alive.
The Bulldogs entered last week’s 2A VHSL regional rankings at No. 10. The victory coupled with a strong finish to the regular season will give Brunswick a chance to finish in the Top 8.
The Bulldogs have been hampered by injuries for most of the first half of the season but Brunswick turned in a total team effort in the win over Park View, getting it done on both sides of the ball.
Park View meanwhile had its chances but just made too many mistakes to earn the win.
The Dragons entered last week at No. 7 in the 3A regional rankings and will also need a strong finish to the regular season to qualify for the 3A playoffs. The good news is that the Dragons finish with three teams in the lower half of the standings.
Park View will hit the road on Friday for another big district contest at Surry HS.
The Cougars fell 42-12 to Southampton HS this past week.
Park View smoked Surry 53-12 last year and has won four of the last five meetings in the series.
Brunswick meanwhile will return home to face Sussex-Central in another key district tilt.
The Bulldogs topped the Tigers 20-16 last season for their first win over the Cougars since a 47-0 win in 2014. The two teams are 7-7 in the last 14 meetings.
