The Brunswick High School varsity boys’ basketball team returned from the holiday break and played their hearts out but fell 65-61 to Indian River HS on Saturday afternoon in the Mike Scott Tipoff Classic at Deep Creek HS.

The victory improved the Braves to 8-1 on the season while the Bulldogs fell to 6-3.

Brunswick came into the game ranked seventh in the Va.Preps VHSL Class 2 state poll while Indian River came in ranked sixth in the Class 5 state poll.

Brunswick led with 1:07 left to play in the fourth quarter before the Braves knocked down three free-throws to knot the score and scored two straight buckets following turnovers in the final 30 seconds to seal a victory.

“Our kids played extremely hard,” said Brunswick coach Charreko Walker. “We had two costly turnovers in the last thirty seconds that was the difference against a good team.”

Jermonta James led Brunswick with 19 point, eight rebounds and five steals while Jadan Firman scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Reginald Walker added 10 points for the Bulldogs while Tavarre Mays came off of the bench to score four points and grab 11 rebounds.

Brunswick shooting guard Jordan Wesson missed the game due to illness.

“We just have to regroup and learn from our mistakes,” said Coach Walker. “These tough out of conference games can only help us.”
