The fourth-seeded Brunswick High School boys’ basketball team gave top-seeded Goochland HS all it wanted in a Class 2, Region A semifinal contest on Thursday evening before falling 96-89 in overtime.
The heartbreaking loss ended Brunswick’s season with a 13-12 record while Goochland improved to 21-3 and sealed a state tournament berth.
“The kids played extremely hard,” said Brunswick coach Charreko Walker. “I’m really proud they didn’t give up when we got down early. We came back and were right there.”
Goochland got off to a great start in the game, jumping out to a 26-7 lead in the first eight minutes of the game.
Brunswick got its offense going in the second quarter as JaQuan Miller scored nine points and Jadan Firman scored seven and the Bulldogs outscored Goochland 24-19 to cut the halftime deficit to 44-31.
The Bulldogs outscored Goochland 22-19 in the third quarter behind seven points from Firman and five from Miller.
Brunswick fought all the way back in the fourth quarter outscoring Goochland 28-17 in the stanza behind 11 points from Miller, six from Firman and five from Savion Glasgow.
Tre’Von Callis hit a shot at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
