The Brunswick High School varsity girls’ basketball team earned a big Tri-Rivers District contest by topping visiting Park View HS 53-45 at home last Wednesday night.
The win, coupled with a 48-44 victory over Sussex-Central HS on Friday, improved Brunswick to 10-8 overall and 9-5 in the district.
Brunswick went right to work in the first quarter on Wednesday, jumping out to a 17-8 lead behind nine points from Aniya Seward and four from Nyiesha Pair.
The Lady Dragons fought back in the second quarter as Mikya Harrison hit two free-throws at the 3:19 mark to trim the Brunswick lead to 19-14.
Tamara Blanks scored on a rebound and putback at the 2:09 mark for Brunswick for a 22-15 lead.
Park View’s Teonia Watts scored with five seconds left in the first half to cut the Brunswick lead to 23-18 at the halftime break.
Both teams’ offense picked up in the third period as Pair buried a trey at the 5:48 mark for a 27-21 lead.
Azaria Williams scored on a steal and layup for Park View at the 5:06 mark but Jamoni Crittendon answered with a trey on the other end for a 30-23 lead.
A steal and layup and two free-throws by Seward gave Brunswick a 34-25 lead at the 2:40 mark but Park View stormed back with a 8-0 run to close to 34-33 with 52 seconds left in the stanza.
Tiara House buried a trey for the Lady Dragons during the big run while Harrison and Sophie Janson added buckets.
