Additional funding for Alberta and Central Rescue approved

LAWRENCEVILLE – Dr. Kristy Somerville-Midgette, Division Superintendent, Brunswick County Public Schools, presented the FY21 Finance Report to the Brunswick County Board of Supervisors.

Dr. Midgette said as of Dec. 31, 2020 the school system has expended $9,212,403.62 from the categorical budget and received a total of $5,212,722.87 in revenues.

The FY21 Budget was created based on an ADM of 1,418. As of Dec. 31, 2020 the ADM is 1,413. Due to the pandemic there have been losses in ADM across the state. The Virginia Association of School Superintendents is encouraging the legislature to hold harmless school divisions for the state budget regarding ADM. Divisions will know more after the General Assembly convenes in January.

The supervisors allocated funds to assist two rescue squads that will cover five day/24 hour coverage: Alberta Volunteer Fire Department - $109,630; Central Rescue Squad - $101,630.

The funding will be retroactive to Jan. 1, 2021 and end June 30, 2021.

In other matters, the supervisors adopted a resolution establishing the policy of the Brunswick County Board of Supervisors for participation in board meetings through means of electronic communication.

On the recommendation of the Personnel Committee the following employees were hired pending a criminal background check: George Stokes – Refuse Collector, James Thibeault – Refuse Collector, Willie Cooke – Convenience Center Supervisor.

The supervisors accepted a bid from the Witmer Public Safety Group, Inc. from Coatsville, Penn. to provide uniforms as outlined in the invitation to bid and authorized the County Administrator to sign the contract on behalf of Brunswick County. Only one bid was received.

Tiffany Dotti was appointed to the Lake Country Area Agency on Aging Board of Directors for a 3-year term. Darleen Ferguson’s term expired on October 31, 2020 and she is not eligible to serve another term.

Garland Baird has resigned from the Executive Director of the Southside Planning District Commission. Dr. Charlette T. Woolridge, County Administrator, will fill the vacancy.

Disbursements totaling $1,222.574.91 were approved.
