To the Editor:

Our lives continue to be changed tremendously due to COVID-19. For example, our children’s education, continued closing of businesses, and we’re still not visiting with friends and family as before, wearing a mask in high populated areas when we are out, and the list goes on. Brunswick County has over 30% of our county’s children living in poverty and over 23% of adults living in poverty and most are our senior and disabled citizens.

The Holiday Season is approaching quickly and many individuals and families in Brunswick County are not certain what that means. Many families continue to be challenged to cover their mortgage costs, pay their rent, pay their electric bill, cover medical costs and prescriptions or food for dinner and the list goes on. The uncertainty is very taxing for so many.

The Brunswick County Department of Social Services is again sponsoring the Holiday Sharing Program to assist eligible families, elderly and the disabled. If you would like to provide a meal for a senior citizen, disabled citizen or family or sponsor a child, senior or disabled citizen, or a family for the upcoming holidays, please call (434) 848-2142 ext: 6872. Due to the continued spread of COVID-19, gift cards (Food Lion or Wal-Mart) in increments of $25, $50 or $100 (with receipt attached) will be collected.

If you would like more information on how you can make a difference for a child, family, senior or disabled citizen this holiday season, please call the Brunswick County Department of Social Services at (434) 848-2142 ext: 6872 or email: elizabeth.woodard@dss.virginia.gov with your request to be a sponsor. You can mail or deliver your gift card donations (with receipt attached) to: Brunswick County Department of Social Services, c/o: Holiday Sharing Program, 201 Sharp Street, Suite 100, Lawrenceville, Virginia, 23868.

We are counting on the citizens of Brunswick County to help make the holidays brighter for the less fortunate. Thanking you in advance for your generosity.

Sincerely,

Richard Blankenship, Director II
