Dragons Show Heart in Loss

The Park View High School varsity football team could have easily folded up the tent after falling behind 22-6 in its home opener against a solid Colonial Heights HS football team on Friday night.

But the Dragons did not let that happen as they came out and battled with everything they had in the second half, forcing double overtime.

Even with numerous players cramping up and several injuries, the Dragons took the lead with a touchdown in the first extra session before the Colonials finally earned the win with a touchdown in the second overtime period for a 40-34 victory.

Park View Coach Tony Whittingham Jr., said after the game that his team showed a lot of resilience in the second half. “I couldn’t ask for any more than what they gave,” he said.

The effort and moxy by the Park View players in the second half on Friday night is what wins ballgames and it is what will lead them to a successful campaign.

The Dragons will now turn their signs to a big road date at Halifax County on Friday night for their final tune-up before opening Tri-Rivers District play at Southampton HS on September 24.

The Comets will bring a 1-0 record into the contest after topping Person County (NC) 42-8 in its season opener. Halifax’s contest against Nottoway last Friday was postponed due to COVID contact tracing within the Cougars program.

Postponements

The Halifax/Nottoway contest was not the only local game postponed on Friday as Brunswick’s contest against Central of Lunenburg was postponed as well as Bluestone’s contest against Greensville.

There is no doubt that the COVID-19 pandemic is still very much affecting our local high-school athletics.

Brunswick’s football contest scheduled this week against Rappahannock HS is also postponed and their contest against Surry HS scheduled for September 24 will be moved to September 27.

The Park View volleyball contest against Greensville HS scheduled for September 21 will also be postponed due to contact tracking within the Lady Eagles program.
