Summer ball is here
The annual All-Star summer beat got underway tbis past weekend with the start of play in the Dixie Softball District 1 Darlings tournament in Lawrenceville.
Despite a quick thunderstorm that rolled through the area on Friday evening, everything went smoothly and there were a number of good ballgames.
Between now and late July, there is a good bet at least a few of our local teams will be in action somewhere across the region.
South Hill is scheduled to play host to several state tournaments a bit later in the summer as the Virginia Dixie Youth Division I and Division II “O” Zone and Coach Pitch state tourneys will be played at Parker Park beginning on July 8.
South Hill will also play host to the Babe Ruth 16-18-year-old Area 2 tournament at Parker Park beginning on June 29.
All-Star action will really get cranked up this weekend when the Dixie Youth District II Coach Pitch, “O” Zone and Minor League tournaments open play in Emporia.
The Dixie Softball District 1 Angels, Ponytails and Belles tournaments will also be in action beginning on Friday in Blackstone.
Best wishes to all of our local teams this summer!
The US Open
Congrats to Matthew Fitzpatrick on a sensational win at the U. S. Open on Sunday afternoon.
I always enjoy watching the top golfers in the world take on a tough test and that was certainly the case last week at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.
There were many more bogeys and double bogeys over the weekend than there were birdies.
Fitzpatrick won his first tournament on the PGA Tour with the Major championship but had to hang on against World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and fledging young star Will Zalatoris who is making a knack of being in the running come the back nine on Sunday afternoon in the majors.
It was a great win for Fitzpatrick and an exciting weekend at The Country Club for golf fans around the globe.
